 Prose - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch
Although some works of prose may happen to contain traces of metrical structure or versification, a conscious blend of the two forms of literature is known as a prose poem.
Much of a society's early literature is written in the form of poetry.
When a poem is translated from one language into another, particularly if it is an epic poem, the poem is often converted into prose.

 Prose Interpretation
Prose is literature that is not marked by rhyme or metrical regularity (in other words, it is distinct from poetry).
A selection or selections of prose material of literary merit, which may be drawn from more than one source.
Students who compete in prose interpretation tend to have interests in both literature and theater.

 Prose Merlin: Introduction
The Middle English Prose Merlin and Thomas Malory's Morte D'Arthur have much in common: both are lengthy Arthurian works in prose, both were written in England near the middle of the fifteenth century, and both are derived in part (Malory) or in full (the Prose Merlin) from thirteenth-century French sources.
Dismayed and aggrieved by Christ's Harrowing of Hell, an event in which the Old Testament patriarchs have been freed from Satan's bondage, the fiends of hell seek a means by which to undo the work of Christ.
The Prose Merlin, on the other hand, is brimming with optimism, and the intention of this work is to portray Arthur and his fledgling court in the most favorable possible light.

The Prose Poem. Michael Benedikt--Brief Prose Poems & Critical Prose
In other words, if the prose poem is a good prose poem, for all its improvisations you sense its shapeliness, the way in everyday life you can sense that a reasonably-under-control person's talking, rather than just some turkey who's just saying whatever happens to come into his head.
After all, while the traditions of verse relate mainly to writing verse, the writing-genres to which prose poems relate are myriad, and are not necessarily esthetic in origin.
The prose poem's fondness for the colloquial, leads I believe to the peculiar kind of humor you find in the work of many prose poets.

 The Prose Edda Index
The Prose Edda is a text on Old Norse Poetics, written about 1200 by the Icelandic poet and politican Snorri Sturlson, who also wrote the Heimskringla.
Hence the Prose Edda is of interest because it contains one of the first attempts to devise a rational explanation for mythological and legendary events.
The Prose Edda contains a wide variety of lore which a Skald (poet) of the time would need to know.

You need to remind yourself, therefore, that with the exception of the stories of Karamzin in the 1790s, Russian literature from 1740 to 1830 was almost exclusively a literature of poetry.
We have seen that after 1830 Pushkin turned more and more to prose, a significant fact given that Pushkin was the greatest poet of the time.
The great novelist Dostoevsky is supposed to have said, referring to himself and his fellow Realists, "We have all come out from under Gogol's 'Overcoat'" (referring to the famous story by Gogol).

 [EMLS SI 7 (May, 2001): 7.1-21] John Donne's "Lamentations" and Christopher Fetherstone's Lamentations . . . in prose ...
A second noteworthy aspect of this versification of Lamentations presented by Fetherstone, also left unsaid in the dedicatory epistle, is that this anonymous friend based her versification of Lamentations not on Tremellius, but on the Geneva translation of 1560.
Indeed, throughout, but especially in the problematic brief verses that make up chapter 3, Donne's poem is a virtual patchwork of phrasings taken alternately from both Tremellius and the verse translation included in Fetherstone's book.
While Donne of course knew the Geneva bible first hand, when he seems to be echoing that translation in his versification of Lamentations, he is actually closer in wording and phrasing to the versification of Geneva published by Fetherstone than he is to the prose of the Geneva itself.

 HELL XV
Brunetto Latini, the Florentine Guelph leader who wrote Li Livres dou tresor, a prose encyclopedia in French, and the Tesoretto, an allegorical poem in Italian, was not literally Dante's teacher, although he greatly influenced his thought.
His sin may not have been sexual, but rather the misleading of Florence politically, by advocating city–states and not universal monarchy.

 prose from On-line Medical Dictionary
The ordinary language of men in speaking or writing; language not cast in poetical measure or rhythm; contradistinguished from verse, or metrical composition.
"I speak in prose, and let him rymes make." (Chaucer) "Things unattempted yet in prose or rhyme." (Milton) "I wish our clever young poets would remember my homely definitions of prose and poetry, that is; prose words in their best order; poetry the best order." (Coleridge)
Hence, language which evinces little imagination or animation; dull and commonplace discourse.

Thomas, F. and Turner, M.: Clear and Simple as the Truth: Writing Classic Prose.
The second half of the book is a tour of examples--the exquisite and the execrable--showing what has worked and what hasn't.
The authors of this book do; and in doing so, they provoke the reader to consider style, not as an elegant accessory of effective prose, but as its very heart.
If only people learned the principles of verbal correctness, the essential rules, wouldn't good prose simply fall into place?

 Prose and verse in Shakespeare
Prose is the vehicle for many of Shakespeare's wittiest characters: Falstaff, Beatrice, Rosalind, the Porter in Macbeth, Autolycus in The Winter's Tale, and many others.
Hamlet's powerful speech "What a piece of work is a man" (2.2.303-16) is delivered entirely in prose, and what are we to make of a play like The Merchant of Venice, in which the prosaic, business-obsessed characters of Venice usually speak in verse and the poetic, imaginative characters of Belmont often speak in prose?
Shakespeare's prose is as masterly as his verse, and often even more dense with meaning (check the footnotes of a passage of prose, and see if there are fewer than for verse).

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Prose Or Sequence
This a, the original text of the jubilus, ought therefore naturally to be prominent in the text which was introduced to replace it.
Under these circumstances it was natural that at the beginning neither rhythm nor metre (still less rhyme, which is of relatively late origin) was taken into practical account, and the whole presented an appearance and form very different from what we usually understand by a poem.
On the whole then the Prosa was true to its name in being prose, except that the fact that the antistrophe had to be as long as the strophe and that the end of the verse had, so far as possible, to correspond with the end of the word imposed a certain restraint.

Does Prose imply that this is simply New Age foolishness, or that there is some truth in it?
Does the ending of the book, in which Sonoma has a genuinely mystical experience, validate New Age ritual?

 History of Prose Style 8: 19th c.
There is a well-known incident in one of Moliere's plays, where the author makes the hero express unbounded delight on being told that he had been talking prose during the whole of his life [Le bourgeois gentilhomme].
In the same way, I trust, that you will take comfort, and be delighted with yourselves, on the discovery that you have been acting on the principles of inductive and deductive philosophy during the same period.
And it is imagined by many, that the operations of the common mind can be by no means compared with these processes, and that they have to be acquired by a sort of special apprenticeship to the craft.

The difference between a Prose Poem and a Short Short is what this contest is playfully trying to answer--without really answering it.
A Prose Poem is a poem, but in prose form.
Traditional poems with the linebreaks simply excised are generally less successful than pieces written with the prose poem form deliberately in mind.

New York State Writers Institute - Francine Prose
Prose is also the author of the book-length meditation, Gluttony (2003), published as part of the Seven Deadly Sins series of Oxford University Press.
She is also the author of six children's books on Jewish subjects, including the soon-to-be-published, Leopold, the Liar of Leipzig (2005).
Against a backdrop of tenure-clutching terror, Francine Prose is once again the great defender of the all-too-human: the weak-willed, the inconsistent, the hungry-hearted and all other sinners caught between their own personal demons and the mandates of our increasingly Puritanical culture.
