Since the realm of matter is the sole provenance of this spiteful god, Basilides finds nothing of value in it, and states that "[s]alvation belongs only to the soul; the body is by nature corruptible" (Irenaeus 1.24.5).
This behavior caused the rulers of the other 364 heavens to oppose the god of the Jews, and to send a savior, Jesus Christ, from the highest realm of the Father, to rescue the human beings who are struggling under the yoke of this jealous god (Irenaeus 1.24.4).

provenance - definition of provenance in Encyclopedia
Provenance is a particularly large concern when it comes to works of art; a documented provenance for a piece demonstrates that it is not a forgery; it was indeed made by the artist given credit for it.
The history of previous owners demonstrates also that the work was not stolen, and that a seller has good title to convey to a purchaser.
Finds that remain in situ are always much more informative than those that have been removed by "collectors;" scientists can learn more about their origins from the environment in which a find was located, but the surrounding dirt and dust is seldom of interest to pot-hunters or treasure-seekers.

 Provenance Research
Research on provenance, or the history of ownership of a work of art, is a traditional part of museum practice.
The importance of provenance research at the museum was made clear when it was discovered that Saint Bartholomew by Bernardino Pinturicchio, once the property of Federico Gentili di Giuseppe, a Jewish resident of German-occupied France, was auctioned with his estate in 1941 without the assent of his family.
For all these reasons, it is rare to have a work of art without some kind of gap in its provenance.

Provenance information is rarely complete (especially in the case of objects of significant age) and it is often impossible to establish an unbroken history for an object, in spite of a researcher's dedication to the task.
In the past several years, there has been a renewed attempt by museums to investigate fully their collections for questionable gaps in the provenance (the history of ownership) of European paintings, sculptures, and drawings.
