 Encyclopedia of Arda: Silmarillion
Quenta Silmarillion, the longest tale, which gives an account of the history of Arda from its beginnings until the end of the First Age.
The full title, Quenta Silmarillion, means 'Tale of the Silmarils'
actually consists of a corpus of five works, of which the Quenta Silmarillion is the central tale.

-=[RedBookofWestmarch]=- The Silmarillion: summary and backgrounds
Although the Silmarillion was published after the author's death, it considers the oldest matter written on the world of Middle Earth.
The Quenta Silmarillion is mainly concerned with the Noldor, who learned most from Aulë.
When he was stationed in France, the ordering of his imagination developed into the Book of Lost Tales, in which most of the major stories of the Silmarillion appear in their first form: tales of the Elves and the "Gnomes", (i.

The Noldor, or Deep-Elves (also confusingly "Gnomes" in early Silmarillion manuscripts and some early printings of _The Hobbit_), are Finwe's people and become attached to Aule, from whom they learn the making of jewels.
These Elves are the mainspring of the whole Silmarillion story.
In some of his earliest drafts of what became the Silmarillion, Tolkien had the elves eventually "waning" to a very small size, like the pretty but trivial pixies of 19th-century fairy tales.

Melkor was the beginning of darkness throughout Middle Earth that would not cease until the end of the war of the ring (this being the reason for The Lord of the Rings).

The Silmarillion is the history of the rebellion of Feanor and his people against the gods, their exile in Middle-earth, and their war, hopeless despite all the heroisim of Elves and Men, against the great Enemy.
The title Silmarillion is shortened from Quenta Silmarillion, "The History of the Silmarils," the three great jewels created by Feanor, most gifted of the Elves, in which he imprisoned the light of the Two Trees that illumined Valinor, the land of the gods.
The tales of The Silmarillion were the underlying inspiration and source of J.R.R. Tolkien's imaginative writing; he worked on the book throughout his life but never brought it to a final form.

 BBC - h2g2 - Tolkien's Silmarillion - An Overview
The Silmarillion is not a single story, but a collection of interconnected legends resembling fairy tales, told in a very old-fashioned style of English.
But the tales within the main Quenta Silmarillion section, which form the bulk of the book, were incomplete and inconsistent.
But it is quite possible that a good movie could be made of some of the stories within the book: the tale of Turin Turambar is probably the most suitable, with a hidden elvish city, a dragon and a doomed hero along with liberal helpings of tragedy, betrayal and incest.

In The Lord of the Rings were narrated the great events at the end of the Third Age; but the tales of The Silmarillion are legends deriving from a much deeper past, when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-earth, and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of tke Silmarils.
The Ainulindale and Valoquenta, which are given at the beginning, are indeed closely related with The Silmarillion; but the Akallabeth and Of the Rings of Power, which appear at the end, are (it must be emphasised) wholly separate and independent.
The book, though entitled as it must be The Silmarillion, contains not only the Quenta Silmarillion, or Silmarillion proper, but also four other short works.

I, on the other hand, had a profound emotional experience during my first reading of the Silm - I was overwhelmed by the depth of the tragedy and beauty in the tale of Arda's Marring and the War of the Jewels.
There is plenty of preternatural beauty to be had in this tale of love and of triumph, overall, which is followed by a war that functions pretty much as a deus ex machina, which Tolkien used aptly in this case.
