Topic: Scheherazade

 -- Beliefnet.com
Scheherazade was not only a fictional character but also a literary device invented to fill the role of narrator of the "frame" story around the tales, which include raucous, bawdy adventures as well as morality lessons and stories loved by children, like Aladdin and Sinbad the Sailor.
Her name was Scheherazade and her marvelous tales, a collection known by Western readers as "The Arabian Nights," have been a part of life in the Islamic world for centuries.
In the frame story, Scheherazade was the daughter of chief minister to a king, Shahrayar, who had been betrayed by his queen and turned violently against all women.

Scheherazade, of course, never finished her tales, but kept her husband enthralled with story after story for 1,001 nights.
The story of Scheherazade provides the narrative thread between the tales, and runs as follows: Scheherazade was the daughter of the grand vizier to Sultan Shahriyar.
The former is the stern sultan; the latter is Scheherazade, weaving her tales.

The Telegraph - Calcutta : Opinion
Scheherazade undertook the most unique mission ever undertaken by either a subject or a storyteller — saving her life, and that of her fellow-citizens, through her body of stories.
There is, for example, a recent (1985) edition of Scheherazade’s tales illustrated by a German artist.
In this story of a subject bringing a ruler to his senses, a story of a storyteller reconciling her audience to the difficulties of continuing with normal life despite fear of betrayal, it is not a man, the sultan’s venerable wazir for instance, who performs the difficult task.

When King Shahryar married Scheherazade, however, she began a nighttime tale that she spun into 1,001 nights of storytelling, leaving the king so spellbound, he spared her.

At all events, Scheherazade, who, being lineally descended from Eve, fell heir, perhaps, to the whole seven baskets of talk, which the latter lady, we all know, picked up from under the trees in the garden of Eden-Scheherazade, I say, finally triumphed, and the tariff upon beauty was repealed.
The king having thus expressed himself, we are told, the fair Scheherazade resumed her history in the following words:

Such ingenuities are to be found throughout the score, and they perhaps explain why Scheherazade has kept its hold on the public while dozens of more facile works that share its melodic charm have disappeared from view.
What also ought to be noticed, but sometimes isn't, is that Rimsky-Korsakov marshals his material with absolute sureness of aim and no little subtlety.

Although the work and its individual sections bear programmatic titles, and the composer initially wrote an introductory scenario, he later stated that he had not attempted to paint any specific images, but rather wished the title to merely guide the listener's attention in the general directions in which his own had wandered.
