Sherlock Holmes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sherlock Holmes' abilities as both a good fighter and as an excellent logician have been a boon to other authors who have lifted his name, or details of his exploits, for their plots.
Holmes' success at his brand of deduction, therefore, is due to his mastery of both a huge body of particular knowledge of things like footprints, cigar ashes, and poisons, which he uses to make relatively simple deductive inferences, and the fine art of ordering and weighing different competing explanations of a body of evidence.

Symons thinks that Conan Doyle deliberately ruled out romance because he believed that Holmes had “to be a man immune from ordinary human weaknesses and passions.” Holmes has larger concerns.

The independence of Paget in interpreting the stories through his images often leads to a subtlesub text that may at times be with odds with traditional interpretation of the stories.
