Topic: Teleri

EN World - Morrus' D&D / d20 News & Reviews Site - The Lamentation of Lolth - Chapter VI
Teleri forces herself awake, pain throbbing throughout her body, bracing herself against the rough-hewn wall of the chamber, trying to remember where the hell she is and what's going on.
Drogo winces at Teleri's fall, and Dunstand's ineffectual dagger.
Teleri is suspicious of anything too good to be true.

 Olwe
This year Olwë and the Teleri upon Tol-Eressëa heard the voice of their friend Ossë; who called upon them and they begged Ulmo to stop the voyage and Ulmo granted this and at his bidding Ossë; rooted the island to the foundation of the sea in the Bay of Eldamar.
The front of the trail of the Elves arrived in Beleriand at the shores of the sea, Ulmo uprooted the Isle of Balar in the Bay of Balar with aid of his servants, moved it to the shores and the Vanyar and Noldor embarked upon it and then they were drawn across Belegaer to Aman.
Therefore Ossë; taught them the craft of ship-building and brought them as a parting gift strong-winged swans and the the swans drew their white ships across the shadowy windless sea and at last they came to the shores of Aman.

THE ROMANCE READER reviews: Wild by Jill Barnett
As fate would have it, Teleri is searching for her missing "magic" stones when she happens upon Roger, unconscious and lying at the foot of a tree with a rope around his neck.
Before long the seclusion of the quiet woods combined with Teleri's affable nature begins to sooth Roger's troubled soul.
Any man would find her hard to resist, let alone a heartsick warrior who, through her ministrations, comes to recognize the fact that his life has been nothing more than one aimless trek.

 Middle Earth Races
Thus some of the Teleri were in Middle Earth, and never saw the light of Aman, and were called the Moriquendi, the elves of the dark.
Of those Teleri who remained in Middle Earth, there were three kindred, the Sindar, the Silvan, and Falathrim Elves.
Thus in Middle Earth there were four kindred of Elvenkind: the Noldor who returned from Aman, and three Teleri tribes, the Sindar, Silvan, and Falathrim.

The Hierarchy of Different Elven Kindreds - Pet Sins Webzine May 2004
Together with the Avari, the Teleri who remained in Middle Earth are counted as The Dark Elves, distinct from the Elves who have seen Valinor - the Elves of the Light.
The Noldor, having returned to Middle Earth, are in turn judged superior in both beauty and strength to the Sindar, since the Sindar (Grey Elves) had not the advantage of having dwelt with the gods in Valinor.
Next in line are the Teleri, not all of whom were focused enough to make it to Valinor.

 Swansinging by Martin Baker
Now we are getting somewhere, for surely the Teleri fashioned these ships in the likeness, specifically, of those swans which had borne them to those shores and which, perhaps, graced the coastal waters of their new abode.
The Silmarillion tells the tale of the Teleri Elves, who after dwelling long upon the island of Tol Eressëa were torn between love of the Sea that beat upon their shores and desire to see Valinor and join those Elves who had gone there before them.
In one version, related in Unfinished Tales, it is said that Galadriel took up arms against Fëanor in defence of her mother's people: whatever the truth of that it must be certain that she took no part herself in the Kinslaying.

Review of WILD by Jill Barnett
Ostracized by the villagers who think she is a witch, Teleri nurses wounded animals, so when she finds Roger near death, unable to speak, she cares for him.
WILD is a story that sweeps you away with the magic of love that grows in a tale of pure romance.
Roger learns much about the meaning of life during the sweet idyll he spends in Teleris realm, an idyll that comes to an end when Roger returns home, bringing Teleri as his handfasted bride.

As Ulmo knew the hearts of the Teleri, and had spoken against the summons, he granted them this, and rooted the island there.
Their hearts had slowly changed, and they were drawn ever more to the light of the Trees.
But as they reached the Bay of Eldamar, also called Elvenhome, near the Eastern Shore of Aman, Ossë cried out and the Teleri begged Ulmo to stop.

The Lord of the Seas by Cirdan
The Teleri had fled from the water's edge, but they would return when Ulmo called to them on his horn of conches, and like the Vanyar and the Noldor before them, they would depart from Middle Earth on Osse's island.
For this reason, the white ships of the Teleri and the swanships of the Falathrim were virtually identical in appearance and make, though those wrought by Cirdan himself were always the best of the ships on either side of the Sea.
Osse searched the seas and found Ulmo trumpeting loudly and leading the Teleri in their swanships drawn by the very strong-winged swans that Osse had gifted to the Teleri and by many other seabirds besides.

The Teleri were the largest of the three hosts of Elves who set out on the Great Journey to answer the summons of the Valar to Aman.
During the revolt of the Noldor, many Teleri were killed in the Kinslaying at Alqualondë, when they refused to give up their swan ships to the Noldorin exiles.
That was where the Teleri developed their love of the sea which would later lead them to become great shipwrights.

When Ingwë, Finwë and Elwë; returned from Valinor bearing the tidings of the Valar, the Avari would not go, preferring their love of the trees under the starlight to the promise of the great light of the Two Trees in Valinor.
For a long age the Teleri dwelt happily in Tol Eressëa, but their hearts slowly became more drawn to the light that flowed from Aman.

Many of the Teleri did not leave Middle Earth; the Sindar and Nandor were Teleri Elves in Origin.
The name was applied to all the Elves of Telerin origin whom the returning Noldor found in Beleriand, save the Green-elves of Ossiriand.
The Noldor rose against the wishes of the Valar, and they would pursue Melkor to Middle Earth, and some of them even committed the first kin-slaying to do so, putting to sword the Teleri mariners who refused to give up their ships.

Nor did she, to tell the truth, particularly notice the lack of a mother's tender care, since she knew practically nothing about mothers from direct observation; the wives of Cadwr's sons lived in Golchi most of the year, and the boys, to all appearances, lived as motherless as she.
Pendaren never spoke of his late wife, and Cadwr always said, "that child Afon," so that Teleri, who had no playmates but those of her own creation, who would have dearly loved another little girl to share her games, imagined a child much like herself.
Teleri's destiny numbers indicate an eventful life, luck (sometimes bad), magic, knowledge, study, and education.

When he thought he had the strength that was needed, he brought his hosts to the Haven of the Swans and began to man the ships that laid there, and to take them away with force.
Clever words from Fëanor did not work in Alqualondë, and the Teleri refused to do anything to aid the Noldor against the will of the valar.
In the end, the Teleri were defeated and a great number of their sailors were brutally slain; for the Noldor had become furious and desperate and the Teleri were weaker and mainly only armed with slim bows.

However, the phonology of the two languages differed much, Telerin often being more conservative than Quenya: Finarfin, a speaker of Noldorin Quenya, is said to have learnt Telerin, clearly indicating that it was a language markedly different from his own (UT:229).

The Quenya used in Middle-earth of the Third Age (the time of the setting of The Lord of the Rings) had come to be a scholarly-pursuit — something akin to Latin in our time.
However when Thingol of Doriath, who was the king of the Sindar (silvan-Elves that stayed in Middle-earth all along) learnt about their slaying of the Teleri, he forbade the use of Quenya between his people and the Noldor, and forced them to communicate in Sindarin only.
The language was also adopted by the Valar who also made some new introductions into it from their own original language.

The Grey Havens - Middle-earth: Ilkorin - a "lost tongue"?
Originally, Tolkien did not imagine the history of the Elvish tongues in Middle-earth quite like the scenario we know from the published Silmarillion.
Tolkien decided that the "Noldorin" language he had already made was not the language of the Noldor after all.
In fact, it turned out to be the language of the Teleri that had remained in Beleriand, who came to be called Sindar (replacing the term Ilkorindi), so Noldorin had to be renamed Sindarin.
