Two Trees of Valinor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The whole of the history of the First Age is strongly affected by the desire of many different characters to possess the Silmarils who contain the only remaining unsullied light of the Trees.
Each tree was a source of light: Telperion's silver and Laurelin's gold.
However the true light of the Trees, before their poisoning by Ungoliant, was said to now reside only in the Silmarils.

 Line of the White Tree
First there was the two trees in Valinor Telperion (the silver tree) and Laurelin (the golden tree), of these Yavanna made an image (a living tree but not giving lights of it own) for the Eldar in Tirion and that was named Galathilion.
Then, Galathilion became once again the White Tree of Valinor "The Light of Valinor" which only can be Telperion in an addition to the texts of the white tree in Númenor.
None of those last three White Trees has a name we know.

Guide to the Silmarillion-Stories of the Valar: The Creation of the Sun and Moon
Tilion was a hunter who loved the bow and the silver light of Telperion, and he begged to be allowed to tend to the last silver fruit forever.
The sun and moon are only lesser shadows of the previous radiance of Telperion and Laurelin, but they served to light up the world and give light to Middle-earth where before darkness and starlight reigned, making it much more difficult for Melkor to spread his evil purpose.
The Two Trees of Valinor were the precursors of the sun and moon, and the beauty of their light will never be matched again.

Nenya and Ancalagon - Debate - THE TOLKIEN FORUM
She took the silver dews from the vats of Telperion, and therewith she made new stars and brighter against the coming of the Firstborn....
Let me use another example from The Sil.: The light of Telperion and Laurelin was trapped inside the body of the Silmarills giving them their most potent beauty.
Yavanna made for them a tree like to a lesser image of Telperion, save that it did not give light of its own being; Galathilion it was named in the Sindarin tongue.

 The Two Trees
Telperion and Laurelin was kindled by Yavanna and Nienna upon Ezellohar in Valinor in Aman in the Valian year 3500.
Of all things which Yavanna made they have most renown, and about there fate all the tales of the Eldar days are woven."
From the two trees came a gush of light and each tree had a cyclus of 7 hours from nothing to full bloom and back to rest, each tree starting one hour before the other finished.

Melkor, the first Dark Lord, and the spider Ungoliant destroy Telperion and Laurelin, its sister tree, to show their contempt for the powers.
Like Aragorn/Elessar, the tree represents the shining light in a dark, perilous world.
Later Yavanna, Queen of the Earth, creates Galathilion, the White Tree of the Eldar, which is a model of Telperion but does not shine.

It was said to have been chosen over the Quenya word tyelpë because of the particular delight that the Teleri had in silver, prizing it even over gold.
Yavanna had made an image of him in Tirion, called Galathilion, from whom the White Trees of N& and later of Minas Tirith were descended.
Curiously, though Telperion is a Quenya name, the word telpë, 'silver', is an element from the Telerin language.
