Money and literature: Edgar Allan Poe
Though it is a kind of detective story, "The Gold Bug" isn't related or similar to the famous trilogy of detective stories in which C. August Dupin is the protagonist.
The story begins and ends with gold; paper is merely a step or detour along the way.
It is significant that the treasure unearthed by Legrand contains jewels and gold ("several very large and heavy coins, so worn that we could make nothing of their inscriptions"), but no paper money.

And why did you insist upon letting fall the bug, instead of a bullet, from the skull?" "Why, to be frank, I felt somewhat annoyed by your evident suspicions touching my sanity, and so resolved to punish you quietly, in my own way, by a little bit of sober mystification.
Jupiter had with him the scythe and spades--the whole of which he insisted upon carrying--more through fear, it seemed to me, of trusting either of the implements within reach of his master, than from any excess of industry or complaisance.
The weight of the insect was very remarkable, and, taking all things into consideration, I could hardly blame Jupiter for his opinion respecting it; but what to make of Legrand's concordance with that opinion, I could not, for the life of me, tell.

What the gods were really telling him is that gold is just a metal.
Wanniski, in other words, has committed the sin of King Midas: He has forgotten that gold is only a metal, and that its value comes only from the truly useful goods for which it can be exchanged.
If it sometimes seems to be more, that is only because society has found it convenient to use gold as a medium of exchange--a bridge between other, truly desirable, objects.

As gold continued to fall, Greenspan at first failed to cut rates, and eventually raised them sharply.
And in the same speech he once again renounced the idea that the Fed can or should try to prevent stock market "bubbles" — though that's precisely what he had tried to do in the name of the "wealth effect." But we can forgive him.
The press didn't really pick up on the importance of this speech, because we've all become accustomed to thinking of gold as a "barbarous relic," to use Keynes' famous phrase.

The Negro adds that Legrand has been talking endlessly about gold in his sleep, and that he brought something for the narrator, handing him a note.
Nearby, Legrand at last stops in front of a large tulip tree, asking Jupiter to climb it, bringing the dead gold-bug along with him.
Although Jupiter's words are difficult to understand due to Jupiter's heavy accent, they may be interpreted as "The other day he gave me the slip before the sun was up and was gone the whole blessed day.

The Gold Bug - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gold Bug is a story of a strange man who seemingly goes mad after finding and being bitten by a bug thought to be made of pure gold.
Once the treasure is safely secured, the man goes into an elaborate explanation of how he knew about the treasure's location, based on a set of occurrences that happened after the discovery of the gold bug.
He notifies his closest friend, the narrator, telling him to immediately come visit where he lives and then notifies the narrator upon arrival that they are embarking upon a search for lost treasure.

To capture the spirit of the original “gold bugs”…and to allow today’s gold bugs to proudly show their support of real money…we have recast the finest example of this rare antique from Jim Blanchard’s collection.
The fact is, the term sprang from one of the most controversial presidential campaigns in U.S. history — the election of 1896 — which was characterized by a heated argument between those who pushed for “free and unlimited coinage of silver” and those who wanted to retain the gold standard.
Last year, we were admiring Jim’s collection on a day when the gold price was leaping higher, and an idea struck: Why not recast these original gold bug pins — this time in rich, 22-karat gold — so that modern-day gold bugs can proudly display their support of real money?
