Lord of the Rings: One Film to Rule Them All, movie review
Do not trust any film critic who does not heap lavish, over-the-top, unabashed praise on Peter Jackson's brilliant big-screen adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's"The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring" (new in theaters, Wednesday, Dec. 19).
I had not read "Fellowship of the Ring," the first book in the three-book "Rings" trilogy, since I was 13.
"Lord of the Rings" is rated PG-13 for largely bloodless violence and intensity.

Author's Note, December 24 2001: This is a review of the Bakshi version of Lord of the Rings which has absolutely nothing to do with the wonderful, marvelous, breathtaking Peter Jackson film The Fellowship of the Ring.
Perhaps college English professors might use the Lord of the Rings film to pad out a class on Heroic Literature.
Given that a truly classic filmed version of Tolkien's tale now exists, I find even less of a reason to even half-heartedly recommend Bakshi's film to all but the most die-hard students of psychedelic rotoscoping.

I think it is important to remember that Peter Jackson took up this film not in order just to make a film of `The Lord of the Rings' but because he wanted to make a 'fantasy just like the `The Lord of the Rings'" as he himself put it.

At first glance, Jackson would seem a strange choice to film a fantasy epic like The Lord of the Rings, as most of his previous movies were B-movie horror (and the exception, Heavenly Creatures, a claustrophobic psychological drama).

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
Like The Tale of Genji, which some say is the first novel, "The Lord of the Rings" is not about a narrative arc or the growth of the characters, but about a long series of episodes in which the essential nature of the characters is demonstrated again and again (and again).
But "Fellowship" is a film that comes after "Gladiator" and "Matrix," and it instinctively ramps up to the genre of the overwrought special-effects action picture.

 The Fellowship of the Ring
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Tolkien described The Lord of the Rings as “a fundamentally religious and Catholic work.” By this he meant not that Catholic faith or teachings were explicitly incorporated into the fabric of Middle-earth, but rather that the imagery and themes were shaped by his sensibilities and beliefs as a Roman Catholic.
Like 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Fellowship of the Ring is unprecedented in its class; it is the uncontestable Citizen Kane of its genre, and may well be the first of one of the most noteworthy film series of all time.
