The Merchant of Venice - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Merchant of Venice is one of William Shakespeare's best-known plays, written at an uncertain date between 1594 and 1597.
Shylock is determined to exact revenge from Christians after his daughter Jessica flees his home to convert to Christianity and elope with the Christian Lorenzo, taking a substantial amount of Shylock's wealth with her.
It is a comedy ("comedy" had a very different meaning at the time; see Shakespearean comedies) and is best known for its portrayal of the Jew Shylock, which has raised questions of anti-semitism.

The Merchant of Venice was first printed in 1600 in quarto, of which nineteen copies survive.
Indeed, it represents wealth derived from inheritance, built on the merchandising of Venice, and is therefore a paradise founded on the despised trade it claims to hate.
His depiction of Shylock, the Jewish moneylender, causes the audience to both hate and pity the man, and has left critics wondering what Shakespeare was really trying to achieve.

The Merchant of Venice Summary & Essays - William Shakespeare
Written sometime between 1596 and 1598, The Merchant of Venice is classified as both an early Shakespearean comedy (more specifically, as a "Christian comedy") and as one of the Bard's problem plays; it is a work in which good triumphs over evil, but serious themes are examined and some issues remain unresolved.
In Merchant, Shakespeare wove together two ancient folk tales, one involving a vengeful, greedy creditor trying to exact a pound of flesh, the other involving a marriage suitor's choice among three chests and thereby winning his (or her) mate.

 calendarlive.com: 'The Merchant of Venice'
Michael Radford's splendid film of "The Merchant of Venice" is so somber — and rightly so — for so much of the time that it's hard to remember it is one of Shakespeare's comedies, indeed regarded as one of his greatest.
What Radford above all accomplishes in his filming of "The Merchant of Venice" is to suggest that, in essence, it is that most modern of entertainments: a dark — indeed, very dark — comedy.
Radford's direction of the ensemble cast is equally felicitous, for he has encouraged the actors to speak their lines in a conversational, natural way yet at the same time savor the poetry and eloquence of Shakespearean verse.

The Merchant of Venice is famous as a "problem play"--the gritty matters of moneylending and anti-Semitism sit uncomfortably beside the fairy tale elements of Portia and Bassanio's romance, and some twists of the plot can seem arbitrary or even cruel.
Shylock wants revenge, and he has the merchant Antonio (Jeremy Irons) at his mercy, for some ill-timed shipwrecks prevent the far from noble Christian from repaying his debt.
One can certainly understand why he tried to exact revenge on one of the wealthy Christians who treated him worse than a dog and personally spat upon him a mere week before coming ask him for a loan.

The inherent problem with any staging of 'The Merchant of Venice' has never been the pseudo-controversial anti-Semitism, but the fact that there are two story lines wildly different in both tone and content; a frothy romantic comedy and a searing tragedy.
While mixing genres was all the rage in the sixteenth century (and mocked by Shakespeare in Hamlet), it rarely fails to grate with modern audiences.
