The Moonstone and British India (1857, 1868, and 1876)
The story of the Moonstone is a fable, a cautionary tale with an overt moral.
The moonstone diamond is itself embedded deeply in superstition, set as it was in the forehead of a four-handed Indian god typifying the moon.
While Herncastle maliciously bequeaths the stone to Rachel Verinder to punish the family that he rejected him, the Brahmins risk their immortal souls by masquerading as members of a lower caste (jugglers and musicians) in order to retrieve the gem, dedicating their lives to the service of their god.

The same note of social defiance rings in The Moonstone when Rosanna, despite her class, her physical handicap, and her prison record dares to love and hope for love from the well-heeled hero of the story, Franklin Blake, in competition with the beautiful and wealthy Rachel Verinder.
Synthesizing several legends of cursed Indian jewels, Collins also drew on the famous Road Murder case of 1860 for several details of the plot, including a paint-stained nightshirt and a tell-tale laundry book.
Critics praised the skillfully woven plot, the colorful characters, the high drama that kept readers in suspense to the last.

Finally through his manipulation of the narrative itself, facts, identities and memory become question marks.
No one is above suspicion, as the idiosyncratic Sergeant Cuff and Franklin piece together a puzzling series of events as mystifying as an opium dream and as deceptive as the nearby Shivering Sand.
