Topic: The Other Wind

Ursula K. Le Guin, The Other Wind
It must be said right away that The Other Wind is indeed very much like "news," in that the story takes up chronologically where the story "Dragonfly" in Tales from Earthsea leaves off.
If one hasn't read all of the previous Earthsea books and at least "Dragonfly" from Tales from Earthsea, the book will be somewhat confusing.
Except that the dead are calling to him in his dreams, begging him to set them free.

 The Other Wind
So that night, when late and fearfully Alder let sleep overcome him, and found himself on the grey hill, the others were with him: the Herbal, a warm presence in the chill; the Doorkeeper, elusive and silvery as starlight; and the massive Summoner, the bear, a dark strength.
And waking, the dream was in him, with him, around him, veiled, and he could hear, always, faintly, through all the noises of wind and sea, the voices that cried his name.
When the others were all settled, the king had Alder tell his story yet again.

 Barnes & Noble.com - The Other Wind
Although The Other Wind can be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel, I think that readers would be doing themselves a great disservice by not reading the first four novels ( A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore, and Tehanu) as well as the short story collection (specifically the novella "Dragonfly").
First, there was The Telling, the widely praised new novel in her Hainish sequence, followed by Tales from Earthsea, a collection of recent short fiction in her other major series.
He dreams of the land of death, of his wife who died young and longs to return to him so much that she kissed him across the low stone wall that separates our world from the Dry Land-where the grass is withered, the stars never move, and lovers pass without knowing each other.

The SF Site Featured Review: The Other Wind
Where the other books have been primarily single-viewpoint narratives, Le Guin here uses a multiple-viewpoint technique, slipping gracefully in and out of her characters' heads, offering not just different pieces of the tale, but different perspectives on it.
The Other Wind follows her into that destiny, and a final redemption of her suffering.
The Other Wind is a challenging, satisfying work -- a book that, unlike some other late additions to established series, really did demand to be written.

Guardian Unlimited Books Review Review: The Other Wind by Ursula Le Guin
But Le Guin has worked out why women can't do proper spells, why her version of death is so nightmarish, and, indeed, why there is magic at all - and what it does to the world, for all the fancy talk of balance that the authorities draw on.
As I slogged my way through the first two Potter books, wondering how much more of Rowling's mumsy, artless prose I could stand, I was nagged by a memory of a richer and more bewildering story.
Marvellously, the book contains humour, which is otherwise a kind of universal acid to children's fable: if it is funny, it corrodes everything it touches.

Ursula K. Le Guin: The Other Wind: A Note
I found the answers to a lot of those questions in the stories that make the Tales from Earthsea.
The last one, "Dragonfly," follows after Tehanu ; and The Other Wind follows after "Dragonfly"; that story is an important bridge in the series as a whole.
Some of the Tales take place before Ged and Tenar were born.

I think there are several really good aspects of this movie.

I’m sure I’ve been “forever lowered” in the eyes of a few others, especially those like my friend George, the poet, who, even in his “daily speech,” speaks as easily as water flows.

The Other Wind (Ursula Le Guin) - book review
Recently bereft of his wife, he has dreams in which she and others among the dead call to him across the wall from the dry land, with the result that he can barely sleep.
In Havnor, Alder meets Tenar and Tehanu and king Lebannen, who faces attacks from dragons in the west and uncertain relations with a new king of the Kargad Lands, who has sent his daughter Seserakh to him.
It is more in the spirit of the original trilogy than Tehanu was -- less didactic and more likely to appeal to children, among other things -- and I can imagine some of those who didn't like Tehanu warming to the more recent novel.

The Other Wind continues the stories of Lebannen, Tenar, Tehanu, and, in a minor role, Ged, from the previous books.
Accompanied by three wizards, two dragons in human form, and one Kargad princess, he sails to Roke where, together with the Masters of that island, they are able to put right an ancient wrong.

 KNOTS, PLUS OTHER WIND INFORMATION
In centuries past, mariners determined the speed of their ships using a knotted "log line." The buoyant line was let out freely as the ship sailed along, and then the number of knots let out during a given time gave the shipmaster a measure of his vessel's speed.
It can however, give you a relative sense to which locations are experiencing strong or weak wind.
Why are wind speeds over water expressed in knots while they are expressed in miles per hour over land?
