book is the Fourth Age which begins after the fall of Sauron and the departure of the elves.

THE TOLKIEN FORUM - Which are the Two Towers?
The author clearly states that the Two Towers would likely mean Orthanc and Cirith Ungol since the first book of the Volume deals with Saruman and the second book of the Volume deals with Frodo and Sam's passage into Mordor and his capture in the Tower of Cirith Ungol.
I'm drawn back to the part of the book where Pippin peers into the Palantari and is confronted by Sauron who advises Pippin to tell Saruman that this morsel is not for him and that he will be sending someone for him......
The first chapter of Book VI in The Return of the King is titled "The Tower of Cirith Ungol." The two groups of orcs who fight over Frodo's mithril shirt are from the two different towers.

The Two Towers (John's Book Pages)
I think that this is my favorite book of the three, but I'll have to reserve final judgment until I reread The Return of the King.
As we might expect from the middle book in a trilogy, The Two Towers develops on plot elements introduced in the first book, and ends on a down note.
The first part of the book has a broad scope: it's about the beginning of the War of the Ring, although it concentrates mainly on Merry and Pippin.

The Two Towers: Extended Edition Binary Bonsai archive
This is a description of Gandalf after his rebirth when Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli find him in the Fangorn forest, and it is my favorite line from the book.
So while I believed that I had a good concept of the fantasy genre, I only knew The Lord of the Rings as a rather large book which lay somewhat outside the frame of what I thought true fantasy should be (that is Dungeons and Dragons and Palladium).
I began reading The Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion as well as various books about the books.

Amazon.com: Books: The Two Towers (The Lord of the Rings, Part 2)
`The Two Towers', the second of the three volume novel, `Lord of the Rings' by philologist J. Tolkien is one of the most influential popular novels of the 20th century.
The illumination and discussions of their doubts, fears, and modest desires against the spectacular backdrop of millennial conflict is so understated, that the two hobbits actually bring a sense of prosaic normalcy to Tolkien's epic fantasy.

The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkien, classic fantasy book
I also have a special fondness for The Two Towers because it is here that Sam emerges as (to me) the true hero of the story.
The middle volume of a trilogy is generally suspect, and I know some find The Two Towers the weakest part of The Lord of the Rings, but it's my personal favorite of the three books.

Weblog Entry - 2001 May 18: "Two Towers: BOOK III - Chapter 2"
I try to read the books about once a year, but it is never as magical as it was to read it the first time.
I agree with Ken, too, that LOTR was one of those books that had the ability to subtly change my perspective on life forever.
The other thing that struck me as I read this chapter again today (yup, I'm re-reading the book again one chapter ahead of Deb as she goes along :)) was how beautifully Tolkien adds subtle touches to make each race fascinating and unique to themselves.

SparkNotes: The Two Towers: Book III, Chapter 1
This absence of the hobbits continues throughout much of The Two Towers, as the hobbits are at the center of everything that occurs, yet are kept offstage, leaving us in doubt about what is happening to them.
The fact that Boromir is killed in battle so quickly after his attempt to commandeer the Ring suggests that his death may be a fated punishment of sorts for his lapse into selfishness and reckless ambition.

DVD Verdict Review - The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers: Special Extended Edition
In the books, Gondor's stud was an all-around good guy; here his character is drastically different.
"From Book to Script" gives the filmmakers the opportunity to present their treatise on making changes to the storyline; they go deep into Faramir's character, the shifting of Shelob to the third movie, and the filmed, but not included, participation of Arwen at Helm's Deep, which sparked a firestorm of criticism among fans.
The first disc offers another interesting feature on J.R.R. Tolkien titled "The Origins of Middle-Earth." Some light is shed on his relationship with his contemporary C.S. Lewis, another forerunner of the fantasy genre with his Chronicles of Narnia series.

J.R.R. Tolkien's "THE LORD OF THE RINGS" Unofficial Homepage
This is the new 'second edition,' which includes a letter written by Tolkien describing his intentions for the book that also serves as a brilliant exposition of his conception of the early ages of Middle-earth.
All three books ("The Fellowship of the Ring," "The Two Towers," and "The Return of the King") in one handy volume.
This is a "movie tie-in" edition, so the artwork on the cover is associated with New Line Cinema's award winning motion picture adaptation.

The chapters follow the same order as the film, i.e it begins with Gandalf facing the Balrog at Zirak-zigil through to Helm's Deep and Gollum at the back, and each of these chapters are preceded by an amazing painting spread over two pages.
I am the author and I want to comment on my book.

UGO.com Freestyle - Two Towers Book Review
In that spirit, we present this review of The Two Towers, book format.
As great as Peter Jackson’s special effects have been in the Lord of the Rings movies, nothing we’ve seen onscreen has matched what we saw in our heads the first time we turned the pages of the books.
Anyway, in the midst of all the hoo-ha about the movie, it doesn’t hurt to revisit what the magic that Tolkien weaved with his pen, first.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
The screenplay explains (with barely disguised contemporary resonance) what we are protecting in Western civilisation when we defend ourselves against those who would wish to destroy it.
When Sam tells Frodo that there are "some things worth fighting for", when Merry tells Pippin that there "won't be a Shire" unless they do something about it, when King Theoden laments that "the sun has gone down in the West" this film could be entitled not the "Two Towers" but "the Twin Towers".
Return of the King may have won more of the Oscars as the culmination of Peter Jackson's magnificent cinematic achievement, but history will in fact adjudge "The Two Towers" as the greatest of the three Rings.
