Topic: The Unforgivable Curses in the world of Harry Potter

List of spells in Harry Potter: Information From Answers.com
Harry Potter himself attempted to use the curse on Bellatrix Lestrange during a climactic fight at the Ministry of Magic, but it did not have much effect — Lestrange reveals that the person performing the curse must genuinely desire to inflict pain, and that the "righteous anger" Harry was feeling at the time was insufficient.
It is possible for the victim to fight the curse, however; the series' protagonist, Harry Potter, is shown to be better than average in shaking this curse off.
Avada Kedavra is one of the three Unforgivable Curses.

Wizarding World - Summary of the the Goblet of Fire
In their Defense Against the Dark Arts class, Moody says that he needs to show them what a curse looks like if they are to defend against it, so he shows them the three Unforgivable Curses, that when used against a human being, carry a life sentence in Azkaban.
Then, a wand appears and a voice casts the Cruciatus Curse on Wormtail, who screams from pain as Harry awakes in pain from his scar - to find himself on the floor with the class looking down at him.
He lets them know that the only person known to survive that one is Harry Potter, whose scar is from that very curse.

Three curses in particular are known as Unforgivable because using them on another human being can result in a life term in Azkaban.
One, the Killing Curse, was used by Voldemort himself on Harry Potter, but the curse backfired and Voldemort was defeated.
These three curses were used extensively by Voldemort's followers during his rise to power in the 1970s, and their use by Aurors against suspects was in turn authorized by Bartemius Crouch senior at that time.

Both the purest heroes and the most evil villains in the books are, so to speak, "on a par" with each other, every one of them has a chance to oppose and eventually conquer the other - no untouchable "Gods", even the "unforgivable" curses only land you a lifetime sentence in Azkaban, not eternal damnation.
Harry Potter and the other kids all represent an inherent breakdown in the order of the way things are supposed to be.
Now, while some in the blogosphere are less than enamored with the Harry Potter series, even these curmudgeons would allow that the series has caused a lot of children to become more voracious readers, which is all to the good.
