Silmarilion Encyclopedia from T to Z
After the fall of Nargothrond, Hurin gave Thingol the Nauglamir in gratitude for his kindness to his family, but when Thingol decided to set the Silmaril in the Necklace he was slain by the workmen - -Dwarves of Nogrod who coveted the treasures of their people and of Fëanor.
But at last, desiring to keep his beloved Luthien from Beren, he demanded a Silmaril as her bride-price, and thus was drawn into the Doom of the Noldor.
After a year (486) Turin was found by Beleg, who told him of the good will of Thingol, but he refused to return to Doriath.

 Encyclopedia of Arda: Elu Thingol
Thingol's doom came upon him when Beren brought him a Silmaril from Morgoth's crown as the bride-price of his daughter L&.
With Melian, Thingol founded the woodland realm of Doriath in the central regions of Beleriand, and there ruled the Sindar for many years.
It is usually assumed that Thingol awoke at Cuivi&, being one of the first generation of Elves, and this seems likely, especially given his own description of himself:

But the march-wardens denied them; for Thingol would suffer none of the Noldor to pass the Girdle, save his kinsfolk of the house of Finarfin, and least of all those that were friends of the sons of Fëanor.
There he lived in deep shadow, loving the night and the twilight under the stars.
But now the trees of Nan Elmoth were the tallest and darkest in all Beleriand, and there the sun never came; and there Eöl dwelt, who was named the Dark Elf.

 Quenya - Free Encyclopedia
The Quenya used in Middle-earth of the Third Age (the time of the setting of The Lord of the Rings) had come to be a scholarly-pursuit — something akin to Latin in our time.
However when Thingol of Doriath, who was the king of the Sindar (silvan-Elves that stayed in Middle-earth all along) learnt about their slaying of the Teleri, he forbade the use of Quenya between his people and the Noldor, and forced them to communicate in Sindarin only.
The Noldor that fled to Middle-earth following the Darkening of Valinor spoke Quenya among themselves.

 Objects of Middle-earth
Beren showed the ring to Thingol, the father of his beloved Luthien, to prove his worth, and he also used it to gain safe passage to the stronghold of Finrod Felagund in Nargothrond.
The Ring of Barahir was kept by the descendants of Beren and Luthien.
