 Readings
Yet the tale of it is remembered still, for Thorondor King of Eagles brought the tidings to Gondolin, and to Hithlum afar off.
Morgoth went ever halt of one foot after that day, and the pain of his wounds could not be healed; and in his face was the scar that Thorondor made.
And Morgoth took the body of the Elven-king and broke it, and would cast it to his wolves; but Thorondor came hasting from his eyrie among the peaks of the Crissaegrim, and he stooped upon Morgoth and marred his face.

Anwar Creatures of Middle - Earth
The only clue is a passage that appears in The Lord of the Rings, referring to '...old Thorondor, who built his eyries in the inaccessible peaks of the Encircling Mountains when Middle-earth was young.' It's plain from this that Thorondor departed Middle-earth some time after the end of the First Age.
Earlier versions of the story published in The History of Middle-earth state more explicitly that Thorondor was one of these, and that he even remained in contact with Manwë during the First Age.
Aside from  the actions, such as the guarding of Gondolion, in which he led his flock, Thorondor performed many heroic deeds himself.

Compare "Starkad", a mythological Scandinavian hero, with Tolkien's mighty mountain "Starkhorn" (a combination of "Starkad" and "Matterhorn"), and the names of deities of Scandinavian mythology "Loki", "Balder", "Thor", and "Odin", with Tolkien names "Loni", "Baldor", "Thorondor", and "Oin".
