Arda - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Because the Sun, Moon, stars, and other objects orbited the planet in the cosmology of Middle-earth they were considered part of Arda, leading to Arda sometimes being called the 'Solar System' of Middle-earth.
A new world will be created then, which will be Arda Healed.
The term for the Earth itself, excluding these celestial bodies, was Ambar or Imbar.

This I say, with the understanding that by giving God a place in his universe, the substance of all Tolkien's work would necessarily have to be interpreted in a different light.
Illuvatar would still have great knowledge of who the Ainur are and thus would be fully aware of what they might do, but he wouldn't necessarily know for certain.
Gandalf himself seems to imply that such a distinction exists when he relates the account of what happened after he fought the Balrog.

LotR Fanatics Library: Timeline of the First Age
So, though this timeline is necessarily uncertain, it would seem that it is as accurate reckoning available of the First Age as is possible, from its beginning to its end.
Consequently, another source must be used for the final century of the first age: "The Tale of Years" in The War of the Jewels.
This, however, is one year earlier than Turin's capture and rescue in the "Grey Annals." The difference is ignored here, and Turin's coming to Nargothrond is left the same: 490.

 Encyclopedia of Arda: Melkor
Said to be the mightiest dweller in Arda, Melkor was of the same order of the Valar and equal in power to Manw&; himself, who was Melkor's brother in the mind of Ilúvatar.
By the time he was released, the Elves had come to Valinor; Melkor turned back to his evil ways; slaying Finw&; and stealing the Silmarils, he destroyed the Two Trees of Valinor and fled back to his ancient fortress of Angband in the north of Middle-earth.
Events of that period are described in this entry, but for events after his return to Middle-earth at the beginning of the First Age, see the entry for Morgoth Bauglir.

The first Era of the Two Trees, and the beginning of the count of Time.
The Ages of the Sun correspond more to the earlier Valarian Eras than to their Ages.
Before the arising of the Sun they were approximately one thousand Valian Years in length (the exact length of a Valian Year is close to 10 "Sun"-years).

THE TOLKIEN FORUM - Question about Smaug
01-18-2004 07:30 AM Here is a link to an entry in The Encyclopedia of Arda (http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/s/smaug.html) which sheds a bit of speculative light on Smaug's origin, that maybe he was born in the First Age in Angband, in Melkor's time.
I think there may be some credence to Smaug's possible status as a dragon of Morgoth and his participation in the War of Wrath, but I have yet to find a "smoking gun" to confirm this, either in Tolkien's writing or on websites such as the Encyclopedia of Arda.
If anyone who could provide me with some feedback on this, or just a similar/opposing theory, I would greatly appreciate it.
