 J. R. R. Tolkien - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tolkien was strongly influenced by Anglo-Saxon literature, Germanic and Norse mythologies, Finnish folklore, the Bible, and Greek mythology.
Tolkien never expected his fictional stories to become popular but he was persuaded by a former student to publish a book he had written for his own children called The Hobbit in 1937.
But Tolkien was not fond of all the artistic representation of his works that were produced in his lifetime, and was sometimes harshly disapproving.

Tolkien's Impact in Literature and Life - PCANews
Tolkien believed that what he wrote in The Lord of the Rings was true, not in the sense that the events really happened, but in the sense that they portrayed truth to us in a way that everyday events could not.
Lastly, Tolkien’s life was dominated by his vision of the future - not a vision of what he would do for God, but what God would do for him.
All the other myths of the world, Tolkien said, are a mixture of truth and error - truth because they are written by those made by and for God - error because written by those alienated by God.

In Tolkien's world the temptation of evil is one that all, or nearly all, of his characters must confront.
Tolkien wrote books of beauty, imagination, and utility, in keeping with his six destiny rhythm, the vibration of co-created worlds, the prince and princess, and pre-creation.
Tolkien is doubtful of man's ability to resist the temptation of absolute power.

 JRR Tolkien
By that time the Tolkien’s family consisted of four children (three sons and a daughter) and more than anything father liked to tell his children about mythical beings – elves, hobbits, etc. At first such stories were simply fairy tales.
And the first book, which made him famous worldwide, “the Hobbit” (published in 1937) was written in the genre of a fairy tale.
After the war he obtained a post on the New English Dictionary, and began to write the mythological and legendary cycle which he originally called “The Book of Lost Tales” but which eventually became known as “The Silmarillion”.

 J.R.R Tolkien Biography - Planet-Tolkien.com
Tolkien customized each letter with the handwriting of the character: the polar bear wrote in runes, Snow Man in all caps, Ilbereth in a flowing script and Santa in a shaky script.
This tale told of a dog that was turned into a toy by a wizard, was lost then turned back into a dog and went on great adventures to the moon.
The debate continues on whether Tolkien's works are children's books, but, no matter whom his books are meant for, most of them began as

 On Tolkien
Tolkien decided that languages related to Westron would have to be translated into languages with equivalent relationships to English.
With Hobbit Westron now translated as English, to convey this relationship Tolkien translated the language of the Rohirrim (in the hypothetical manuscript) into words and names that were similar, though not exactly like, Old English words and names.
As a result, he began to spend more time composing the stories of this imaginary world, "middle earth" (which was a common name for the world in Old English times, setting earth between heaven and hell).

 J.R.R. Tolkien AUTHOR CATALOG
J. Tolkien's groundbreaking epic of good versus evil, extraordinary heroes, wondrous creatures and dark armies of terror will be presented in a trilogy of feature films.
This second part of THE BOOK OF LOST TALES includes the tale of Beneren and Luthien, Turin and the Dragon, Necklace of the Dwarves, and the Fall of Gondolin.
The Silmarillion tells of the Elder Days, of the First Age of Tolkien's World, when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle Earth, and the High Elves made war upon them for the recovery of the Silmarils, the jewels containing the pure light of Valinor.  It is to this ancient drama...

Sacred-Texts: Sources of Lord of the Ring
Tolkien was a distinguished scholar of Middle and Old English.
The cursed ring of doom is likewise a central theme of Tolkiens' mythology.
Among the sources for Tokien's languages was Welsh, and the Welsh stories of the 'Red Book of Hergest' appear to have also had an influence on the narratives of Tolkien's fictional 'Red Book of Westmarch'.

 A Biography of JRR Tolkien
It was at this boarding house, at the age of 16 that he would meet and fall in love with Edith Bratt.
This work would one day result in his famous books.
The young man lavished praise on the book, and Unwin decided to take a risk on it.

JRR Tolkien Biography - The Tolkien Society
In typical Tolkien fashion, he then decided he needed to find out what a Hobbit was, what sort of a hole it lived in, why it lived in a hole, etc. From this investigation grew a tale that he told to his younger children, and even passed round.
At this time he was also working on various poetic attempts, and on his invented languages, especially one that he came to call Qenya [sic], which was heavily influenced by Finnish - but he still felt the lack of a connecting thread to bring his vivid but disparate imaginings together.
The reader's reaction was mixed: dislike of the poetry and praise for the prose (the material was the story of Beren and Lúthien) but the overall decision at the time was that these were not commercially publishable.

 Tolkien's Not-So-Secret Vice
Later Tolkien decided that the last word should have been omentielvo instead, and this form was used in later editions.
But in Tolkien's pre-LotR notes, Sindarin is called Noldorin, and before that Gnomish, for this was the language of the Noldor or "Gnomes", the "Wise Elves".
The book that provided Tolkien with the word ond was finally identified in Vinyar Tengwar #30: Celtic Britain by Professor John Rhys, that according to Carl F. Hostetter and Patrick Wynne "consists of over 300 densely-set pages and eschews neither etymological discussion, untranslated Latin passages, nor untransliterated Greek words".

 Amazon.com: Books: J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biography
Carpenter chronicles Tolkien's early life with a special sensitivity; after losing both parents, Tolkien and his brother Hilary were taken from their idyllic life in the English countryside to a poverty-ridden existence in dark and sooty Birmingham.
Tolkien also found love, and discovered within himself a surpassing love of comparative linguistics.
He is very fair with his subject, and treats Tolkien neither as a deity nor an eccentric old man. The man who created Middle Earth was human, and Carpenter captures this brilliantly.

 J.R.R. Tolkien Biography
When he was lying awake, his father would come and sit on his bed and tell him tales of Carrots, a boy with red hair who climbed into a cuckoo clock and went off on a series of strange adventures.
And in The Hobbit the leaf-mold of Tolkien’s mind nurtured a rich growth with which only a few books in children’s literature can compare.
Those who know and love the works of J.R.R. Tolkien know also that they stand on their own and need no further explication or justification.
