J.R.R. Tolkien Collection - Special Collections - Marquette University
Tolkien manuscripts reside at Marquette because of the vision of William B. Ready (1914-1981), director of libraries from 1956 to 1963.
The manuscript is in Tolkien's calligraphic hand, illustrated throughout with ink and colored pencil drawings.
Generous bequests and gifts of books, research papers, and other secondary- material by Tolkien scholars and collectors have contributed immeasurably to the holdings at Marquette.

Where to Go for all Things Tolkien - Christianity Today Magazine
During this time he wrote "The Book of Lost Tales," published as "The Silmarillion" 60 years later, which describes the historical underpinnings of Middle Earth, the mythological setting for "The Hobbit" and its 600,000-word sequel, "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

As an openly gay atheist, Sir Ian McKellen said he had no problem putting his own spin on Tolkien's visions.

 A Tolkien Research Paper
Through the course of his life, an intriguing personality was formed, and Tolkien, with his epic tale, created a new style of fantasy writing that has stretched far beyond his printed books and lasted five decades.
Even more fascinating than his stories is the tale of how this mastermind was created.
Finally, Tolkien was able to get back to what he loved: language and literature.

 J.R.R. Tolkien Biography
And in The Hobbit the leaf-mold of Tolkien’s mind nurtured a rich growth with which only a few books in children’s literature can compare.
When he was lying awake, his father would come and sit on his bed and tell him tales of Carrots, a boy with red hair who climbed into a cuckoo clock and went off on a series of strange adventures.
Those who know and love the works of J.R.R. Tolkien know also that they stand on their own and need no further explication or justification.

 Michael D. C. Drout
My edition of Tolkien's previously unpublished 1930's book of Beowulf criticism, from which he drew his famous lecture"Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics." Published by Arizona Medieval and Renaissance Texts and Studies.
Fall 2004: I will be on research leave and will not be teaching during the Fall Semester of 2004.
Texts examined include the Benedictine Rule and Regularis Concordia, the Anglo-Saxon wills, the Old English translation of the Enlarged Rule of Chrodegang and the 'wisdom poems' of the Exeter Book.

 The Tolkien Sarcasm Page
For those of you who are doing research for a book report on Tolkien, but don't want to be bothered with reading volumes and volumes of his work, you may find this Synopsis of The Lord of the Rings to be helpful.
The magic and depth of Tolkien's works has, so far, eluded the filmmakers who have tried to reproduce it.
I was fortunate enough to have relatives who uncovered a rare, almost-unknown Tolkien manuscript in 1995: Saruman's Diary.

 Essays on Tolkien's Middle Earth
But as works of pseudo-historical research, I have striven to present a precise account that is faithful to Tolkien's evidence.
The following personal writings enquire into various aspects of Middle Earth, using J.R.R Tolkien's written works, combined with common sense and imagination, to provide a fuller picture of the topic.
They represent my interpretation and emphasis, and your own may differ.

 Christian Fantasy - Classic Authors
These are the authors whose works, I would argue, form the core of Christian fantasy in English.
Tolkien sites in particular tend to vary widely in quality.
They have also, I think it fair to note, had a significant impact on the subsequent development of fantasy literature, Christian or otherwise, especially (of course) J.R.R. Tolkien.

Thevina's Tolkien Fanfiction and Research Articles
Short, darkly humorous poem written for the Mother's Day challenge at Parma Eruseen.
She posted a survey to the current writers, asking questions relating to why they write Tolkien fanfiction and their relationship, if any, to the women characters in Tolkien's works.
The author, who is both a woman and a Tolkien fan, wondered about this, and decided to ask the writers themselves.

News item - New Tolkien Research Materials
The J.R.R. Tolkien Collection includes more than 11,000 pages of original manuscripts for three of the author’s most celebrated works, The Hobbit, Farmer Giles of Ham, and The Lord of the Rings, in addition to the original copy of the children’s book, Mr.
The retired professor described his inspiration for Hobbiton, and the "slow degrees" by which he composed The Lord of the Rings.
Finally, Tolkien described the parts of The Lord of the Rings that most moved him, nearly a decade after the book’s release: the description of Cerin Amroth, the sound of horns of the Rohirrim, and Gollum’s failure to repent.

As readers of the three main Inklings know, Lewis, Williams, and Tolkien offered up not only excellent fiction and theological reflection, but also some of the 20th Century's most incisive cultural critique of the demise of Western Culture.
My hope is to provide avenues of exploration for all aspects of their work here.
Admirers, students, and critical readers of C. Lewis and the Inklings, sit down and stay a while!
