 Breaking Into Travel Writing
Travel editors at large papers sometimes are confronted with a hole - a planned story that didn't work out or a story pre-empted by other news events -- if they have your story, and it fits (i.e.
Travel writers who only have one story circulating aren't likely to succeed.

You would not catch them at a travel writers' party, yet their stories all fit an acceptable definition of travel writing: a non-fiction work in which the author goes from point A to point B and tells us something about it.
What makes them different from the commissioned traveloguers, is that they set out because of an inner compulsion to do so, or are driven by some form of necessity, and their tales, therefore, have the power to reconnect us with the essential.
Even Claude Levi-Strauss, in his arresting introduction to Tristes Tropiques, confessed to hating travel books, before writing one that is literature of the highest order.

 Writer's Encyclopedia--Letter T
A writer who writes a textbook has the best chance of having it published if he has teaching experience in the field he covers, knowledge of current research and the ability to write clearly.
The writer who intends to publish his own book may attempt to gather endorsements for his book while it is still in the manuscript stage; these testimonials can then be incorporated on the dust jacket (or cover, if the book is paperback) when the book is printed.
The travel article has two basic objectives: to inform the reader by way of facts and to enlighten him by way of impressions.

World Hum: Travel Dispatches from a Shrinking Planet
Writes Haines: “The admirable grace and charity of the Sahel's forlorn people is offset by the cheapness of life there and their tolerance of the cruel -- slavery, for example, or female circumcision.
The book chronicles Tayler’s travels in Sahel, which Tayler describes as “the southern shore to the Saharan sand sea” in Africa.
As Tony put it in the New Yorker story: “Those vivid colors of the early books, once they get blended with so many other authors and editors and concerns about what the customer wants, they inevitably become gray and bland.

 Travel Writers
Essentially, a good travel story is like a good work of fiction, with a beginning, a middle and an end, characters and conflict, dialogue, telling details, a narrative arc.
There are only three things which make life worth living: to be writing a tolerably good book, to be in a dinner party for six, and to be traveling south with someone whom your conscience permits you to love.
The writing sample must not exceed 2,000 words and does not have to be travel-related.

 The Travails of Travel Writing
Patrick Holland, a scholar from the University of Guelph in Ontario who recently co-wrote a book called Tourists With Typewriters, summed it up like this: "Travel writing, it is suggested, is reprehensible in its insensitivity, obsolete and, in the age of globalization and virtuality, redundant."
That, unfortunately, didn’t stop him from railing further against the writing he receives.
After all, travel writing as a genre contains all the hegemony, diachrony and gender politics that contemporary scholars live for.

The market is awash with travel writing courses and how-to books, all provided by "experts" who are probably making more money selling their knowledge than they ever did actually writing for someone else.

Most major newspapers have travel sections, dozens of magazines are devoted to travel, book publishers churn out guidebooks to destinations great and small, and books by authors like Paul Theroux and Peter Mayle have helped to breathe new life into the long-dormant travel narrative or "armchair travel" genre.
In the "armchair travel" genre, you need two things to succeed: an interesting topic and the ability to write a nonfiction book that reads much like a novel.
You can reach that audience if you know your subject and can bring it to life through good writing.
