Ungoliant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ungoliant aided Melkor in his attack on the Two Trees of Valinor; she drained the Trees of their sap and poisoned them after Melkor wounded them, and she drained dry the Wells of Varda, so that nothing remained of the Light that was before Sun or Moon, except in the Silmarils of Fëanor.
He refused to give them to the Great Spider to be devoured, for he desired them greatly, and Ungoliant would have slain Melkor in the ensuing battle had not the Balrogs come and saved their master, causing Ungoliant to flee to the Ered Gorgoroth in Beleriand.
It is thought that she may have been one of the Maiar whom Melkor corrupted long ago, but she is not listed among the Ainur.

 Ungoliant\'s children
Ungoliant went and dwelt in the north of Beleriand, beneath Ered Gorgoroth; "and that dark valley...was after called Nan Dungortheb, the Valley of Dreadful Death, because of the horror that she bred there.
In an epic duel with Morgoth, over possession of the Silmarils, she nearly overcame him in Lammoth; and Morgoth was only saved by the coming of his balrogs from Angband, who issued forth at his titanic cry of alarm.
Of the fate of Ungoliant no tale tells.

The Barrow-Downs Discussion Forum - What was Ungoliant?
Athena, took pity on her by turning her into a spider (one advantage of being a god is that you don't have to make sense).
Similarly, when Ungoliant went over to Melkor in the beginning, she had the shape of a spider forced upon her by Vaire.
I know that Ungoliant was in the form of a giant spider when she and Melkor attaked the Two Trees of Valinor, but what was she to start?

Ungoliant was a spirit of evil that inhabited spider form> She was a maia probably corrupted by Melkor but in Arda she served only her insatiable hunger.
So was she turned into spider form by the Valar or did she choose that form herself, or does any tale tell.
I agree with Fingy (can I call you that, man?) I see Ungoliant as more of a dark, huge spider form or shape thats kinda "made of darkness"

 Ungoliant
Where she came from no one knows, but it was said among the Eldar she came down to Eä and was corrupted by Melkor, but she had dismastered him, desiring to be her own master.
Melkor then cried out a terrible cry, which was heard by his Balrogs which had remained hidden within the dark dungeons of Angband, awaiting his return.
Now quickly they came forth and rent asunder Ungoliant's dark cloud with their whips of flame and she fled south.

Ungoliant looks good, and the GF_Unlight Discussion could maybe continue in this thread...
BTW, I've always thought Shelob should have some form of "unlight" aura or something...I don't recall precisely, but didn't the books emphasize the darkness interwoven with her webs?

The Barrow-Downs Discussion Forum - Like mother, like daughter? Ungoliant and Shelob
Just a question I had - I'm reading the "Unfinished Tales" for the first time and had a question about Ungoliant the spider as she appears in "The Theft of Melko" (her name there is Ungwe Lianti).
Shelob definitely didn't have Ungoliant's unsatiable hunger (sheez, she already sapped the two trees' lights and she was still hungery!), though hungery she always seemed to be.
But remember that Tolkiens works sometimes are different from his earlier writings (as I'm discovering, but all are very interesting).
