Perhaps one of the most compelling arguments for the use of young adult literature in the classroom is that this type of literature is more interesting for young adults, because they can better identify with the contemporary characters, situations, and themes of these texts.
I have learned about theories of teaching adolescents and teaching literature, about choosing instructional texts and reflecting on the content, about the various ways learners can relate and respond to texts, and about best practice in the area of teaching literature with adolescent learners.
The ideal classroom for teaching literature with young adults would use literature to teach curricular objectives as well as help to cultivate life-long readers.

I'm still interested in the question of what is YA literature, but I'm even more interested in "What is a YA?"
Most of them were reprints from Asimov's, Analog, Realms of Fantasy, Weird Tales, etc.
But I think young people have an advantage at understanding that which goes against "common sense," which is just another word for believing that our own experience is all the experience there is, which is another way of saying "stupidity."
